The long history and architecturalrichness of the Czech Republic makes theconservation and restoration of historicalmonuments another important area withnumerous practical applications. Researchis focused on identifying the materials usedin historical monuments, on understandingthe origins and mechanisms of damage,and on the design of new methods for theanalysis, conservation or restoration of suchmonuments. Studies include the treatment 61of archaeological fi nds, and the interactionof glass and ceramic surfaces with differentsoils, solutions and atmospheres. In termsof organic materials, research is focusedon wood, textiles, leather, paper andphotographs.
