The third main research stream is focusedon two main directions: the technologyof pharmaceutical substances, and theirmedical applications. The fi rst involvesthe synthesis of pharmaceutical substances,including their detailed chemical andstructural characterization. The mainsubjects of interest are stereoselectiveheterogeneous catalysts, modifi edcompounds and homogeneous catalyticcomplexes. Considerable attention isbeing paid to the heterogenization ofhomogeneous catalysts by means ofanchoring a homogeneous catalyst ona suitable support matrix while retainingits original stereo-selectivity; successfulanchoring enables the catalytic complex tobe more easily separated from the reaction 60mixture. Consequently, a specifi c focus isthe development of separation techniquesbased on the application of magnetic microornanoparticles carrying a specifi c partnerfor the isolation of target compounds;separation is then carried out using anexternal magnetic fi eld. Theoretical researchis followed by the design, optimization andvalidation of selected processes commonin the pharmaceutical industry, such as wetgranulation, powder blending, or tabletcompressing. The second research directionis oriented towards the development andtesting of biomedical materials. In particular,this concerns the development andmodifi cation of implants more compatiblewith the human body. The materials studiedinclude metallic, polymeric, ceramic andcomposite ones. Both bioinert and bioactivematerials are prepared and tested using invitro methods.
